Luxury Wedding Cake Design, Newcastle

Beginnings:

I first met Eunice and Stephen, just five weeks before their beautiful wedding at The Biscuit Factory, in Newcastle. They initially decided to skip a bespoke cake for their special occasion.  However, Their photographer recommended exploring my portfolio and they fell in love with my unique, luxury wedding cake design in Newcastle.

The couple are both heavily inspired by the arts, with Eunice creating beautiful digital paintings and Stephen expressing a passion for music. During our first communications, they expressed that they could tell my work was more than just “a cake” — that it was about art, aesthetics, and creativity — and that this shifted their desire toward a bespoke wedding cake design for their special day. Despite already being booked for that week, I truly felt that our artistic visions were aligned and believed our shared passions could lead to something unique and beautiful. At one point in our conversations, Eunice said, “I know you just get me,” and that simple sentence captured the essence of why I love what I do — working together to transform inspiration into something deeply personal.

Consultation:

During our first consultation, the couple told me all about their beautiful wedding plans. We discussed every detail of their day — from Eunice’s stunning wedding dresses to the venue styling. I learned that Eunice has a deep love for botanical plants, especially those with bold leaves and striking veins. Naturally, they had fallen in love with the Garden Room at The Biscuit Factory. A true tropical oasis in the heart of Newcastle, it features indoor water features, winding trees, and lush climbing plants — a setting that perfectly matched their creative and nature-inspired personalities.

They also had a very clear vision for their wedding cake. They didn’t want anything traditional or floral. Instead, the cake needed to be packed with flavour, feel modern and artistic, and reflect their shared passions. Most importantly, it had to feel personal — a true expression of them as a couple, designed to both complement the space and delight their guests.

Design Process: Translating Vision into Edible Art

I began by sketching a two-tier cake with a clean silhouette — a crisp white fondant base with sharp edges and minimal lines to reflect the couple’s modern aesthetic. I wanted the cake to look completely at home in their wedding venue, almost as if it were growing out of the greenery itself. To achieve this, I selected natural plant elements that would blend seamlessly with the Garden Room, including fern leaves and Alocasia — one of Eunice’s favourites. To honour their love for the arts, I also included an abstract hand-painted watercolour background behind the foliage, which gave the design cohesion and an added layer of meaning.

To bring in Stephen’s musical influence, the couple asked if I could subtly incorporate music into the cake. I did this by hand-painting delicate golden musical notes into the watercolour background. I also tucked tiny wafer-paper notes among the leaves, catching the light just enough to stand out without overpowering the design. These small details helped the cake feel deeply personal — a blend of nature, art, and music, just like the couple themselves

Challenges: Achieving Perfect Detail.

Creating delicate, realistic Alocasia leaves that rom wafer paper challenged my precision and creativity. The contrasting veins made it hard to achieve a realistic level of detail with colour washes and shaping alone. Instead, using real imagery of the leaves for reference, I carefully hand-painted each leaf with edible cocoa butter paints, allowing for a greater level of layering and blending of colours and enabling me to achieve much finer details. Each brushstroke of cocoa butter paint, added a Luminous lustre to the leaves, creating a more realistic appearance.

The Final Cake: A Quiet Showstopper.

Stood amongst the winding branches and lush green foliage, the finished cake looked beautifully at home in the Garden Room at The Biscuit Factory. But it didn’t just look stunning — it tasted just as special. Eunice and Stephen chose fresh, delicious cake flavours that reflected their individuality, including a standout ginger and lemon tier that surprised and delighted guests. Eunice later told me, “The ginger and lemon is the best cake flavour I’ve ever had — unique and refreshing.”

The couple were overjoyed with the design too. She later told me, “It looked incredible. The musical and the botanical merged so well together. Thank you for designing our dream wedding cake.”
